“The darker the creature the greater is its susceptibility to light”
Armed with nothing but a flashlight I walk the second floor of my house, stepping lightly to avoid making too much sound as I place my weight down to the old wooden floorboards underneath, all the while repeating my father’s last words in my head, hoping that repeating them enough times may make me believe it to be true.
“The darker the creature the greater is its susceptibility to light”
*Creak* Sweat intermixed with tears run down my face. I clench my teeth, moving toward the stairs. COURAGE.
“The darker the creature the greater is its susceptibility to light”
I reach the stairs and take hold of the reeling with one hand, tightly clutching the flashlight in my other. “Creak”.
*GROWL*
I bolt down the rest of the stairs, throwing myself at the ground and directing the flash of light toward where the sound had came. Nothing there. I take a few short breaths as I try to recover my composure, and then I stand up and start walking toward the door which is but 10 steps away. Slowly I creep forward. 8 steps. 5 steps.
“GROWL”
I place my hand on the handle, but just as I am about to open the door I feel a sharp pain go through my shoulder. I turn around swiftly with the light in hand, screaming with the last of my breath.
“THE DARKER THE CREATURE THE GREATER IS ITS SUSCEPTIBILITY TO LIGHT”
However, it is my fathers face that looks down on me. Twisted and ruined, but still my father. He smiles wide, the light doing the creature… my father…. no harm.
The last I hear before joining him in the abyss is:
“I Lied”
